Getting Started
What is Verse, and how does it help me develop a writing practice?
Verse transforms your writing journey into a daily creative adventure. You can set personal goals—like writing for a set number of minutes each day or finishing a short piece—whether it’s a poem, flash fiction, or nonfiction.

Inspired by fitness tracking, Verse uses a ring system to mark your progress and celebrates each milestone with playful animations. Think of it like checking off an achievement every time you nurture your craft.

For subscribers, our library of idea prompts and visual cues helps spark fresh concepts, so you’re never stuck staring at a blank page.

Privacy remains at Verse’s core. Your work is stored securely and stays completely private, letting you explore your creativity without worrying about external judgment.
How do I get started with my first piece?
Getting started in Verse is simple—whether a prompt immediately sparks your imagination or you’re already brimming with ideas:
1. Use a Prompt from Your Dashboard
• On the main Dashboard, tap any prompt that catches your eye.
• You can glance over the prompt text; as soon as you see something that resonates, select Start Writing to open the editor and start creating.
2. Create Directly from Your Collection
• Head to your writing collection—labeled Poems, Stories, Journal, or Writing, depending on which type you’ve chosen to focus on.
• Select New Poem, New Story, New Entry, or New Writing at the top right to open the editor and dive in.
With each new entry, you’re building a consistent writing habit—and Verse is here to support every step along the way.
What kind of writing can I do with Verse?
Verse opens the door to a variety of writing styles—poetry, flash fiction, flash nonfiction, or journaling—so you can focus on what inspires you. If you’re not sure where to begin or want to experiment, try the Experimental mode. It removes any specific framing and lets your words flow freely. Verse adapts to your preferences to help you stay consistent and creative.
Can I change my writing focus after I set it up?
Absolutely. You can update your writing focus anytime in Settings. Verse is flexible, so your creative practice can grow right alongside you.
Do I need a subscription to start writing?
Not at all. Writing and tracking your goals in Verse are completely free. A subscription is only required if you want to explore our library of prompts for extra inspiration.
Goals & Progress
How do I set my daily writing goal?
When you first join Verse, you choose a daily writing goal during onboarding. If your needs change down the road, simply update your goal anytime in Settings.
What do the different colored rings mean?
The rings in Verse track your progress at a glance:
Orange: You’ve met your daily writing time goal.
Green: You’ve met your time goal and completed a piece of writing (like a poem, story, or journal entry).

Your ring automatically transitions from orange to green once both goals are met.
How does Verse track my writing time?
Verse starts tracking as soon as you begin working in the editor. Simply write, and the app keeps a record of how long you’re actively creating—no extra steps required.
What counts as completing my daily practice?
Once you’ve written for the set number of minutes in your goal, that time-based target is marked complete. You can also mark a piece of writing as finished—whether it’s a poem, story, or journal entry—letting you track both time and completed works.
How do streaks work?
Verse automatically maintains multiple streaks, reflecting your consecutive days of engagement:
App Activity: Get credit simply for opening Verse daily, even if you don’t meet your other goals.
Writing Goal Minutes: Earn a streak by meeting your daily writing time goal.
Completed Writing: Track another streak for finishing a piece each day.
What if I miss a day?
If you skip a day, any streak for writing time or completed writing resets—but your overall progress and writing history stay intact. You can start fresh the next day.

Verse also shows your average streak length, so you can focus on growing your consistency over time instead of dwelling on a single missed milestone. Just select the drop down that appears above your streaks in the dashboard to switch from best to average.
Writing Prompts
What kinds of writing prompts does Verse offer?
Verse features two types of prompts to spark your creativity:
1. Idea Prompts – Text-based cues crafted to inspire fresh ideas or themes for your writing.
2. Visual Prompts – Artwork-based prompts designed to evoke feelings or spark imaginative thinking through imagery.

Both prompt types help you break through writer’s block and experiment with new creative directions.
How are Verse’s prompts different from other apps?
Verse’s prompts encourage exploration without forcing a specific outcome. Unlike apps that provide rigid or formulaic prompts, Verse offers:
Idea Prompts – Thought-provoking text that leaves room for your unique interpretation.
Visual Prompts – Curated artwork to kindle emotional or imaginative responses.

By blending text and images, you’ll always find an inspiring angle to begin or continue your work.
Can I see yesterday’s prompt (or older prompts)?
Absolutely. Verse provides on-demand access to every prompt—much like a streaming service—so you can explore any prompt, anytime. While the app does highlight a daily prompt on your dashboard for quick inspiration, you’re never limited to just that day’s selection.
How many prompts do I get?
Verse launches with a robust library of 366 prompts in the top tier—183 idea prompts and 183 visual prompts. If you’re using the idea prompts–only tier, you’ll still have 183 prompts to explore.

We regularly add fresh prompts to keep your creative well replenished, ensuring there’s always something new to spark your imagination.
Your Writing
Where are my writings stored?
Your work is safely synced across devices using iCloud’s private database. Verse also keeps a local copy on your device, so you can access your writing offline anytime—even without a stable internet connection.
Can others see what I write, or is it private?
Everything you write in Verse stays private by default. It’s only accessible through the app and stored in a secure location on your device. If you share your device with others, they could potentially view your work—unless you protect it with device-level security features like passwords or biometric locks.
What if I lose access to iCloud (or Apple terminates my iCloud)?
Your words remain safe. Verse stores a local backup on your device that you can find in Settings.
• If iCloud access is lost or terminated, syncing across multiple devices will stop, but you’ll still have copies on any device where they’re saved locally.
• For extra protection, it’s wise to create manual backups of your writing from time to time.
Should I back up my writing somewhere else?
While Verse automatically saves your work in iCloud and on your device, you can add another layer of assurance by creating manual backups. Export your local files through Settings to an external drive or a secondary cloud service for peace of mind.

If you prefer tangible records, Verse also lets you print your writing—ideal for those who like to keep hard copies.
Can I move my writing to other apps (export)?
Absolutely. Verse stores your writing in a standard text format (.txt), making it easy to use in word processors or cloud services:
On Desktop:
1. Go to Settings and select Backup Recovery.
2. Under “Missing writings on iCloud? All your writings are backed up locally here,” click the link to open the local folder containing your text files.
On iPhone:
1. Go to Settings and select Backup Recovery.
2. Tap Recover Stories to create a .zip file of your writings, which you can then share or store wherever you like.
How do I organize or edit my pieces?
All your work lives under the focus you’ve chosen—whether Poems, Stories, Journal, or Writing. Simply click on any piece to open and edit it. The list is ordered by creation date, so your newest pieces appear last.

While Verse doesn’t yet offer advanced organization features (such as search or custom sorting), we’re always refining the app. If organization is important to you, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Just head to Settings and select Contact Us to share your feedback.
